What is Safe and Sound

The Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) is a listening-based approach developed by Dr. Stephen Porges and delivered through Unyte. Grounded in Polyvagal Theory, SSP uses specially filtered music designed to support greater flexibility in how the nervous system responds to cues of safety, connection, and engagement. The music emphasizes particular sound frequencies to exercise neural pathways involved in listening, autonomic regulation, and social engagement.

SSP may be helpful if you find yourself frequently on alert, easily overwhelmed, sensitive to sound or other sensory input, disconnected or shut down, or having difficulty settling after periods of stress. It may also complement psychotherapy when working with anxiety, trauma, or chronic stress.

Listening is individualized and carefully titrated according to your response. Some people comfortably listen for longer periods, while others begin with only a few minutes, listen every other day, pause when needed, or spend time with variable pathways. Your response guides the pace—not the clock.

How Do I Get Started?

STEP ONE

Schedule a 30 minute Consultation & Listening Trial — $125

Required before enrolling in a package.

This will give you a chance to see if the SSP is right for you.

STEP TWO

Purchase SSP Complete Home Package and start the protocol!

Complete Safe & Sound Package

Full Package | $450

If you are already participating in psychotherapy at HAVEN, SSP can be incorporated into our existing work without adding a second schedule of required appointments.

Your package includes:

  • Initial SSP consultation and readiness assessment ($125 applied to the package)

  • Individual access to SSP through the Unyte Health platform

  • Supported protocol access

  • An individualized listening and pacing plan

  • Initial supported listening

  • Ongoing monitoring of your listening activity and response

  • Adjustments to pacing as needed

  • Brief portal check-ins related specifically to SSP

  • Access to all levels of SSP as appropriate

Listening may take place independently at home or during portions of our regularly scheduled psychotherapy sessions. When listening brings up something that would benefit from deeper exploration or integration, we can work with it in psychotherapy.

Your regular psychotherapy sessions are not included in the SSP package and continue at your usual session rate.

Safe & Sound When You Have a Primary Therapist Elsewhere

Adjunct SSP | $650

You do not need to leave an established therapeutic relationship to work with me through SSP.

Adjunct SSP is designed for people who have a primary therapist elsewhere and would like additional professional support specifically for the listening protocol.

Your package includes:

  • Initial consultation and readiness assessment

  • Individual access to SSP through the Unyte Health platform

  • Supported protocol access

  • An individualized listening and pacing plan

  • Initial supported listening

  • Ongoing monitoring and pacing adjustments

  • Brief SSP-specific portal check-ins

  • Scheduled midpoint and completion check-ins

  • Collaboration with your primary therapist, with your written permission

  • A progress summary for your therapist when appropriate and authorized

If additional psychotherapy or clinical support is needed during the protocol, we can discuss whether a separate appointment with me or additional work with your primary therapist would be most appropriate.

Because listening responses vary, completion of SSP or RRP cannot be guaranteed. Your package fee covers protocol access, individualized planning, professional monitoring, and support—not a guaranteed amount of listening or a particular outcome. If listening becomes uncomfortable, we can slow down, pause, or adjust the plan. Choosing to discontinue after enrollment does not automatically result in a refund of the package fee.
